At the Washington Business Journal’s 50 Best Places to Work awards ceremony on June 2, Building Group employees waited with anticipation as the rankings were unveiled. The results were worth the wait — the Building Group was named the overall No. 1 Best Places to Work in the category, Large Business/Non-local headquarters. The categories, based on number of local employees, included Small, Medium and Large businesses — with the latter segregated by Local vs. Non-Local HQ.
As representatives from winning companies were invited up to the stage to accept their awards, they were asked to select one word to describe their company. For the 10 Building Group attendees, the word “People” immediately came to mind. Mike Sloan, executive vice president, Building Group, proudly stated, "All of our employees deserve special recognition for their contributions in making the Building Group an awesome place to work. Once again, our company’s identity tagline reads true, “It’s All About People!”
About the Best Places to Work Competition
The competition began in March when the WBJ issued a call for nominations. Then surveys were sent out to the employees in nominated companies asking them to rate their employers in the areas of leadership, recognition, benefits and growth. The employees were probed for their personal opinions about their organizations, managers, co-workers and their own jobs. After reviewing hundreds of applications, WBJ narrowed the down the candidates to 50 companies, and then ranked them in each category based on employee survey results. To participate, companies were required to have an address in Washington, D.C.; Alexandria or Falls Church, Virginia; or one of several neighboring counties.
